State Senate Candidate and Providence Firefighter Cameron Moquin Cast As Leading Role in Wizard of Oz Documentary from Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Cameron Moquin, a Providence firefighter of thirteen years and Democratic candidate for Rhode Island Senate District 5, has been cast as the second billed principal in Finding Oz, a feature documentary on the making of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The film is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, Chad Verdi’s Verdi Productions, and Danny Strong Productions, with CreativeChaos vmg, and directed by Emmy nominee Tom Donahue.
Moquin plays Mervyn LeRoy, the MGM producer who held the celebrated production together through director changes and crises on set. Filming took place across Rhode Island, including Providence, North Kingstown, and Newport, and wrapped June 18.
“When I received the email that I had been booked for the part, I thought I was reading it wrong and immediately wrote back for clarification,” Moquin said. “I’m told the audition went well.”
Moquin came to the role through Boston Casting and describes acting as an occasional pursuit rather than a career. Most of his film work has been as a background performer, and Finding Oz is the first audition that earned him a principal role, a non speaking part in the film’s reenactments. He says any future in film is unknown.
Filming fell during Pride Month, a coincidence Moquin found fitting. The film’s signature song, “Over the Rainbow,” became an enduring anthem for the LGBTQ community.
Asked how he would balance the fire service, occasional film work, and the Senate if elected, Moquin kept it simple. His focus right now, he says, is public service.
